Selling Fee Calculators: What Each Platform Actually Takes
Every marketplace advertises a headline fee and then charges more than that. These calculators model the full fee stack for each platform — the percentages, the fixed cents, the conditional extras — and then go one step further: they separate your payout (what the platform pays you) from your profit (what is left after the item and its shipping actually cost you money).
Short answer: for US sellers in 2026, effective fees range from about 4% (Depop) to 20% (Poshmark over $15), with eBay, Etsy and Mercari in between — and the right platform depends as much on your price point and category as on the rate.

Headline fee comparison
| Platform | Fee model (verified) | Calculator |
|---|---|---|
| eBay | eBay charges a final value fee on the total amount of the sale (item + shipping + sales tax) — 13.6% in most categories up to $7,500 and 2.35% above — plus a per-order fee of $0.30 ($10.00 or less) or $0.40. | Open |
| Etsy | Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item plus shipping (and gift wrap), and US payment processing of 3% + $0.25 on the total including tax. Offsite Ads, when applicable, add 12–15%. | Open |
| Stripe | Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per successful US online card payment. International cards add 1.5%, currency conversion adds 1%, and manually entered cards add 0.5%. | Open |
| Mercari | Since January 6, 2025, Mercari charges sellers a flat 10% selling fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, with no payment processing fee and no listing fee. | Open |
| Depop | Depop charges US sellers no selling fee — only payment processing of 3.3% + $0.45 on the item price plus shipping and tax, and an optional 12% boosting fee on boosted sales. | Open |
| Poshmark | Poshmark charges a flat $2.95 on sales of $15.00 or less and 20% on sales over $15.00, with no payment processing fee and free listing. | Open |
Effective fee at two price points (identical simple sale)
Same scenario for every platform: item price only, no shipping charged, no sales tax, no optional add-ons (no eBay Promoted Listings, no Etsy Offsite Ads, no Depop Boost, domestic card for Stripe). Each figure is computed live by that platform's verified fee engine — the same code behind its calculator. Treat this as an apples-to-apples fee check, not a "cheapest platform" verdict: fee bases differ and each platform reaches a different audience.
| Platform | Effective fee on $25 sale | Effective fee on $100 sale | Fees verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBay | 15.2% | 14.0% | 2026-08-23 |
| Etsy | 11.3% | 9.9% | 2026-08-23 |
| Stripe | 4.1% | 3.2% | 2026-08-23 |
| Mercari | 10.0% | 10.0% | 2026-08-23 |
| Depop | 5.1% | 3.8% | 2026-08-23 |
| Poshmark | 20.0% | 20.0% | 2026-08-23 |
Fixed per-order and per-transaction cents (Etsy's $0.20 listing fee, Stripe's $0.30, eBay's per-order fee) weigh more on small sales — that is why the $25 column is higher for some platforms even when the headline percentage is identical.

Why "what you keep" is not your profit
Most fee calculators stop at payout: sale minus platform fees. That number overstates what a sale is worth. A $36 payout on a $35 item is a loss if the item cost $20 to source and $6 to ship. Every calculator here therefore asks for your item cost and real shipping cost, and reports profit and margin alongside payout — plus the break-even price at which the sale stops losing money.
Fees also interact with taxes. Platform fees reduce the profit that self-employment and income tax are calculated on, which makes an accurate fee estimate the first step of an accurate tax estimate. See the self-employment tax calculator and 1099 tax calculator for the next step.
