eBay Fee Calculator

Calculate exactly what eBay takes from a sale — the category-specific final value fee, the per-order fee, and optional promoted or international fees — then see your real profit after item and shipping costs.

Short answer: in most categories eBay charges 13.6% of the total sale amount (item + shipping + sales tax) up to $7,500, then 2.35% above that, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 ($10.00 or less) or $0.40. Rates vary by category — the calculator applies the correct one.

How this calculator works

  1. Total amount of the sale = item price + shipping charged to the buyer + sales tax collected. eBay calculates the final value fee on this total, per item.
  2. Final value fee = the category percentage applied to the total, using the category's tier structure (for example 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35% above), rounded to the nearest cent.
  3. Per-order fee = $0.30 when the order total is $10.00 or less, $0.40 when it is over $10.00 (waived for athletic shoe sales of $150 or more).
  4. Optional additions: insertion fee (only after 250 free monthly listings), Promoted Listings ad rate (% of the total sale), and the 1.65% international fee.
  5. Payout = item price + shipping charged − total fees. Sales tax is collected and remitted by eBay, so it is never part of your payout.
  6. Profit = payout − item cost − your actual shipping cost. Break-even solves for the lowest price where profit is not negative.

Worked example

A $50.00 item with $6.00 shipping charged and 6% sales tax makes a total sale amount of $59.36. The final value fee is $8.07 and the per-order fee is $0.40, for total fees of $8.47. eBay pays out $47.53. After a $20.00 item cost and $5.50 in real postage, the actual profit is $22.03 — a 44.06% margin on the sale price.

The details that change what eBay takes

The fee base includes shipping and sales tax. eBay's final value fee applies to the total amount of the sale, not just the item price. On a cheap, heavy item with $12.00 shipping, that shipping is charged the same 13.6% as the item itself.

Category choice matters more than most sellers realise. The same $100.00 sale costs $14.00 in fees in most categories but $7.10 for a guitar and $5.40 for an NFT. Listing in the wrong category can nearly double the fee — and mis-categorising to dodge fees violates eBay policy.

High-value items get cheaper at the margin. Above $7,500.00 per item, most categories drop to 2.35% on the excess. Some categories (bullion, handbags, jewelry) instead switch the rate on the whole amount, which creates small price cliffs — the calculator handles both structures.

Performance surcharges are excluded by design. Sellers rated Below Standard pay an additional 6% (7% after four consecutive months), and Very High "item not as described" rates add 5–6%. These are avoidable penalties, not the standard fee, so they are disclosed under assumptions rather than built into the default estimate.

Selling the same item on another marketplace? Compare with the Mercari fee calculator or Poshmark fee calculator — the differences are larger than most sellers expect.

Assumptions and what this does not include

What the calculation assumes

  • US-registered seller without an eBay Store subscription, meeting performance expectations (no Below Standard or Very High surcharges).
  • Fixed-price, single-item sale; the final value fee is calculated per item on the total amount of the sale (item price + shipping collected + sales tax).
  • Sales tax, when a rate is entered, is calculated on the item price plus shipping charged. eBay collects and remits the tax; it is not part of your payout — it only raises the fee base.
  • The percentage part of the final value fee is rounded to the nearest cent before the per-order fee is added — the same ordering as eBay's own published worked examples.
  • Promoted Listings Standard charges your chosen ad rate on the total amount of the sale, only when a promoted click leads to the sale.

What is not included

  • eBay Store subscription rates, eBay Motors vehicle fees, eBay Live sales and Real Estate listings — different fee schedules apply.
  • Performance surcharges: an additional 6% (7% after four consecutive months) for Below Standard sellers, and an additional 5–6% for Very High "item not as described" rates.
  • Optional listing upgrades (Bold, Subtitle, Gallery Plus, second category) and the $20 dispute fee.
  • The 3% seller currency conversion charge applied when eBay converts funds between currencies.
  • Classified Ad format fees ($9.95 per 30-day listing, no final value fee).
