Etsy Fee Calculator

See exactly what Etsy takes from a sale — listing fee, transaction fee, payment processing, and optional Offsite Ads — then your real profit after materials and postage.

Short answer: Etsy charges US sellers a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item plus shipping (and gift wrap), and payment processing of 3% + $0.25 on the total including tax — roughly 10–11% of a typical sale before any optional advertising.

How this calculator works

  1. Listing fee = $0.20 per sale (the listing renews at $0.20 each time an item sells).
  2. Transaction fee = 6.5% × (item price + shipping charged + gift wrap charged). For US sellers, sales tax is excluded from this base.
  3. Payment processing = 3% × (item + shipping + gift wrap + sales tax) + $0.25, the published US Etsy Payments rate.
  4. Offsite Ads (only if selected) = 15% or 12% × (item + shipping + gift wrap), capped at $100 per order.
  5. Payout = item price + shipping + gift wrap − total fees. Sales tax is collected and remitted by Etsy, so it is never part of your payout.
  6. Profit = payout − item cost − your actual shipping cost. Break-even solves for the lowest price where profit is not negative.

Worked example

A $35.00 item with $5.50 shipping charged (no tax, no Offsite Ads): listing fee $0.20, transaction fee $2.63, processing $1.47 — total fees $4.30, payout $36.20. After $12.00 of materials and $5.00 of real postage, profit is $19.20 (54.86% margin).

Why Etsy's real take is higher than 6.5%

The advertised transaction fee is only one of three charges on every sale. Once the $0.20 listing fee and 3% + $0.25 processing are included, a typical US sale loses about 10–11% to fees — and cheap items lose proportionally more, because the $0.20 and $0.25 fixed parts weigh heavier on a $10 sale than on a $100 one.

Sales tax raises the processing fee, not the transaction fee. Etsy's 6.5% excludes US sales tax, but the 3% + $0.25 processing is assessed on the total including tax. The difference is small per order but real — the calculator models both bases separately.

Offsite Ads are conditional, not default. They only apply when an offsite click leads to the order, and shops under $10,000 in trailing-year sales can opt out entirely. Older blog posts still quote a universal 12% or 15% "Etsy fee" — that has never been how the program works.

Assumptions and what this does not include

What the calculation assumes

  • US-based shop using Etsy Payments with a US bank account (3% + $0.25 processing).
  • One sale of one quantity; the $0.20 listing fee applies because selling an item renews the listing.
  • Sales tax, when a rate is entered, is calculated on the item price plus shipping. Etsy collects and remits US sales tax; it is not part of your payout — it only raises the processing-fee base.
  • The sale is not attributed to Offsite Ads unless you select it — the fee is never applied silently.
  • Fees are rounded to the nearest cent at each step.

What is not included

  • Etsy Ads pay-per-click spend (a seller-set budget, not a per-sale fee).
  • Etsy Plus subscription ($10/month) and Pattern site fees.
  • In-person sales through Square (not subject to the 6.5% transaction fee).
  • Currency conversion fees for listings priced in a currency other than your payment account currency.
  • Regulatory operating fees that apply in a small number of non-US jurisdictions.
